Understanding the Problem

An oven that won't heat is one of the most common oven problems. For electric ovens, the bake or broil element may have burned out. For gas ovens, the igniter is usually the culprit. A faulty temperature sensor, thermostat, or control board can also prevent heating.

Helpful Repair Tip

For electric ovens, look at the bake element at the bottom – if it doesn't glow red, it's likely burned out. For gas ovens, watch the igniter – if it glows but the gas doesn't light after 90 seconds, the igniter is too weak.

Replaced the bake element and our oven heats perfectly again

Repair Time Estimate
15 minutes

Our GE oven stopped heating completely — the broil element worked fine but the bottom bake element was totally dead. I could actually see a small crack in the element where it had burned through. Ordered the replacement bake element which was surprisingly affordable. The repair was one of the easiest I have ever done. Just removed two screws holding the old element in place, pulled it forward, disconnected the wires, and connected the new one. The whole thing took 15 minutes. Oven preheats to 350 in about 10 minutes now just like it used to. Definitely recommend trying this yourself before paying for a service call.
