Front Drum Glide Replacement – How to Diagnose & Fix Squeaks or Rubbing

Understanding the Problem
Front drum glides (also called drum slides or felt/glide strips) are plastic or nylon pads mounted at the front bulkhead that support the dryer drum as it spins. Over time they wear down and let the drum rub against the front bulkhead causing squeaks, scraping, metal-on-plastic noise and uneven drum rotation. Replacing worn front glides restores smooth, quiet operation. 1) Verify the problem and locate worn glides - Unplug the dryer. Open the dryer door and manually rotate the drum. Listen and feel for rough spots, scraping, or a rattling/squeaking noise near the front of the cabinet. If the drum wobbles front-to-back or you see the drum edge contacting the front bulkhead, the front glides are likely worn. - Inspect through the front opening (with the door open) for visible flat/rounded or missing glide pads on the front lip of the drum or on the bulkhead. If you can’t see clearly, remove the front panel as described below for a close inspection. 2) Tools and parts required - Tools: screwdriver set (Phillips and flat), nut driver or socket set (commonly 1/4"–5/16"), putty knife or trim tool, needle-nose pliers, flashlight, shop vacuum and rag. - Parts: replacement front drum glide(s) or glide kit matched to your dryer model. Many kits include 2–3 front glides and screws. Also consider high-temp dryer grease/anti-seize for the glide mounting points. 3) Accessing the front drum glides (common procedure; exact steps vary by model) - Unplug the dryer and shut off gas for gas dryers. - Remove the lint screen and take out any screws under the lint trap (some models hide a screw inside the trap housing). - Release the top panel (usually clips at the rear or screws at the back). On many models you lift the top and prop it or remove it entirely. - Remove the front panel: open door, remove door screws or top door hinge screws, then unhook the front panel. Some models require tilting the panel forward to disengage bottom clips. - With the front panel removed you’ll have access to the drum lip, bulkhead, glides and idler/belt if needed. 4) Remove and replace the worn front glides - Inspect each glide: if the pad is worn down to the fastener, rounded off, cracked or missing, replace it. Note how it sits (direction and orientation) before removal. - Remove the old glide: pry out clips or unscrew the glide fastener. Keep hardware if the new glide uses the same screws; otherwise use supplied screws. - Clean the mounting area with a rag and vacuum lint away. If the drum edge has sharp burrs, lightly sand or deburr to prevent rapid wear of new glides. - Install the new glide into the bulkhead or onto the drum lip according to the kit instructions. Make sure the glide is seated fully and fastened snugly but do not overtighten plastic screws. - If kit includes lubricant, apply a thin smear of high-temp dry lubricant to the contact surface per manufacturer instructions (avoid oily lubricants that attract lint). 5) Reassemble and test - Reinstall the front panel and top, reconnect any door switches or wiring harnesses you disconnected. - Reinstall lint trap and screws. Plug the dryer back in and run an empty cycle while listening for noise and watching drum rotation. The drum should turn smoothly without scraping and with minimal side-to-side play. Safety note: Always unplug the dryer (and turn off gas at the shutoff valve for gas dryers) before beginning repairs. Use non-conductive tools around wiring, and if you are uncomfortable working with disassembly, hire a qualified appliance technician.
Common Symptoms
Squeaking or scraping noise from the front of the dryer, visible wear or missing glide pads, drum rubbing against the front bulkhead, uneven drum rotation or increased vibration.
Common Causes
- Normal wear of the plastic/nylon glide surface from drum contact over years
- Lint and debris build-up increasing friction and accelerating wear
- Damaged or deformed drum edge or bulkhead causing abnormal contact

Helpful Repair Tip
Press the drum forward at the top front while rotating it—if the drum edge contacts or skates over the bulkhead and makes scraping/squeaking, the front glides are worn and need replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to replace front drum glides?
For a homeowner with basic tools, expect 30–60 minutes. Time varies by model and experience—some dryers require removing only a few screws while others need more disassembly.
Can I lubricate the glide instead of replacing it?
Lubrication can temporarily reduce noise but won’t restore worn thickness or correct drum wobble. Replacing worn glides is the proper fix; use high-temp dry lubricant only as directed and not in place of replacement.
