Washing Machine Making Loud Noise During Spin Cycle: Causes and Fixes
Why Is My Washing Machine So Loud?
A washing machine that suddenly starts making loud banging, grinding, or squealing noises during the spin cycle is trying to tell you something. While some noise is normal, especially during high-speed spin, unusual sounds often indicate a worn part that needs attention. Catching these issues early can prevent more expensive damage.
Banging or Thumping Sounds
Worn Shock Absorbers (Front-Load Washers)
Front-load washers use shock absorbers to dampen the movement of the wash tub during the spin cycle. When they wear out, the tub moves excessively and bangs against the frame. You'll notice the whole machine vibrating more than usual. Shock absorbers typically come in pairs and cost $20-$40 per set.
Worn Suspension Springs (Top-Load Washers)
Top-load washers use suspension springs to support the tub. When a spring breaks or stretches, the tub becomes unbalanced and bangs against the cabinet during spin. Springs are inexpensive and relatively easy to replace.
Unbalanced Load
Before assuming a part has failed, make sure you're not overloading the machine or washing a single heavy item (like a comforter) without balancing it with other items. An unbalanced load is the most common cause of banging during spin.
Grinding or Scraping Sounds
Worn Tub Bearing
The tub bearing allows the inner tub to spin smoothly. When it wears out, you'll hear a loud rumbling or grinding noise that gets worse over time. On front-load washers, try spinning the drum by hand with the machine off — if it feels rough or grinds, the bearing is worn. This is a more involved repair that can cost $100-$200 for parts.
Worn Drive Pulley
The drive pulley connects the motor to the wash tub via a belt. If the pulley is cracked, worn, or loose, it can cause a scraping sound during the spin cycle.
Squealing or Screeching Sounds
Worn Drive Belt
If your washer uses a belt drive system, the belt can become worn, cracked, or glazed over time, causing a squealing noise. Belts are inexpensive ($5-$15) and easy to replace.
Worn Clutch Assembly (Top-Load)
The clutch connects the transmission to the inner tub and helps the tub gradually get up to the proper spin speed. When it wears out, you may hear squealing or smell burning rubber during spin.
When to Act
If the noise is new or getting worse, don't ignore it. A failing bearing or shock absorber can cause additional damage to other components if left unrepaired. Most of these repairs are within reach of a handy homeowner with basic tools.
