Washer Won't Drain? How to Fix Common Washing Machine Drainage Problems
Why Won't My Washing Machine Drain?
If your washer fills with water but won't drain at the end of the cycle, you're dealing with one of the most common washing machine problems. Before calling a repairman, try these DIY fixes.
Common Causes
1. Clogged Drain Pump Filter
Most front-load washers have an accessible drain pump filter (usually behind a small door at the bottom front). Coins, hair ties, socks, and debris can clog this filter and prevent draining. Clean it every few months as part of regular maintenance.
2. Faulty Drain Pump
The drain pump pushes water out of the tub and into the drain hose. If the pump motor has failed, or if the impeller is broken, the washer won't drain. You may hear a loud humming or buzzing sound if the pump is trying to run but can't.

3. Kinked or Clogged Drain Hose
Pull the washer away from the wall and inspect the drain hose. Look for kinks, clogs, or improper installation. The drain hose should not be pushed more than 6-8 inches into the standpipe.
4. Failed Lid Switch (Top-Load Washers)
On top-load washers, the lid switch assembly prevents the washer from spinning and draining when the lid is open. If the lid switch fails, the washer may not drain even with the lid closed.
How to Clean Your Drain Pump Filter
- Place towels and a shallow container under the filter access door
- Open the access panel (usually bottom-right of front-load washers)
- Slowly unscrew the filter cap — water will flow out
- Remove any debris from the filter
- Check inside the pump housing for obstructions
- Replace the filter and close the panel
Prevention Tip: Always check pockets before loading the washer. Coins, keys, and small items are the #1 cause of drain pump clogs and damage.
