How to Clean and Maintain Your Dishwasher for Better Performance

Why Dishwasher Maintenance Matters

Most people assume their dishwasher cleans itself, but food particles, grease, soap scum, and mineral deposits build up over time, reducing cleaning performance and potentially causing mechanical problems. A simple monthly maintenance routine takes about 15 minutes and can extend your dishwasher's life by years.

Monthly Maintenance Checklist

1. Clean the Filter

This is the single most important maintenance task. Most dishwashers made after 2010 have a manual filter (older models had self-cleaning filters that were noisier). The filter is located at the bottom center of the tub.

  1. Remove the bottom rack
  2. Twist the filter counterclockwise and lift it out
  3. Rinse under warm water, using a soft brush to remove trapped food
  4. Replace it and twist clockwise to lock

How often: Monthly for average use, bi-weekly if you run the dishwasher daily.

2. Clean the Spray Arms

The spray arms have small holes that can become clogged with food particles or mineral deposits. Remove each spray arm (they usually twist or snap off) and use a toothpick or thin wire to clear each hole. Rinse under running water.

3. Wipe Down the Door Gasket

The rubber gasket around the door traps food particles, mold, and mildew — especially at the bottom where it doesn't get rinsed. Wipe it with a damp cloth and mild cleaner. For mold, use a solution of baking soda and water.

4. Run a Cleaning Cycle

Once a month, run an empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaner or 2 cups of white vinegar placed in a dishwasher-safe container on the top rack. Use the hottest cycle available. This dissolves grease, removes odors, and clears mineral buildup.

5. Check and Clean the Drain Area

Look around the drain at the bottom of the tub for any debris — broken glass, food particles, or other objects that could damage the drain pump.

Quarterly Deep Clean

  • Clean the door edges and hinges with a toothbrush
  • Inspect the drain hose for kinks or clogs
  • Check the float switch (the small dome in the bottom of the tub) for debris
  • Wipe down the exterior and control panel

Tips for Better Dishwasher Performance

  • Scrape, don't rinse: Scrape large food particles off dishes but don't pre-rinse — detergent needs some food to cling to in order to work effectively
  • Load properly: Don't block the spray arms and face dirty surfaces toward the center
  • Use the right detergent: Pods and tablets generally perform better than liquid or powder
  • Run hot water first: Run the kitchen faucet until the water is hot before starting the dishwasher
  • Use rinse aid: It prevents water spots and helps dishes dry faster

When to Replace Parts

If cleaning doesn't improve performance, you may need new spray arms, a filter, or a wash motor. Search your dishwasher's model number at PartsDiscount.com to find replacement parts.
